The recent declaration of a State of Emergency in Rivers State by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is a stark reminder of the deepening political crisis in our region. At the heart of this crisis is the power struggle between Nyesom Wike, the immediate past Governor of Rivers State and now the FCT Minister, and the current Governor, Siminalayi Fubara. Their political battle has plunged the state into turmoil, but we must not allow ourselves to become pawns in this conflict.
While emotions run high, and grievances abound, we must not let our anger and frustration lead us toward destruction. As young people, we hold the future of the Niger Delta in our hands, and now more than ever, wisdom and restraint must guide our actions.
Our region has long been the backbone of Nigeria’s economy, contributing significantly through its vast oil and gas resources. However, with every act of violence, every pipeline explosion, and every descent into chaos, we are not punishing politicians—we are destroying our own land. The damage from these actions is not temporary; it leaves lasting scars on our environment, our economy, and our communities. Blown pipelines mean polluted waters, devastated farmlands, loss of revenue, and increased hardship for the very people we seek to protect.
We understand the frustrations. We understand the deep-seated anger that stems from years of political neglect, economic deprivation, and unfulfilled promises. However, history has shown us that violence does not bring sustainable solutions—it only leads to more suffering. We must channel our grievances through the appropriate channels, demand accountability through dialogue, and engage in constructive activism that forces meaningful change.
Peace is not a sign of weakness. It is a tool of strength and intelligence. If we truly want a better future, we must be willing to engage leaders, demand responsible governance, and push for the development we rightfully deserve. Our voices must be heard, but they must be heard through peaceful means.
To our brothers and sisters who may feel compelled to take up arms or destroy infrastructures in protest, we implore you—think of the future. Think of the young children growing up in these communities, the fishermen and farmers whose livelihoods are destroyed with every explosion, and the countless lives disrupted by violence. Let us not make our region unlivable for our own people.
We call on all Niger Delta stakeholders—traditional rulers, community leaders, youth organizations, and civil society groups—to come together in dialogue and seek lasting solutions to our challenges. We must advocate for development, demand better governance, and ensure that our voices are heard through peaceful, strategic engagement.
Let us be builders, not destroyers. Let us be the generation that seeks solutions, not one that perpetuates suffering. Peace is the only path to lasting prosperity for the Niger Delta.
