The Atamu Social Club of Nigeria, a leading non-profit socio-cultural organization dedicated to the unity and sustainable development of the Urhobo people, successfully concluded its 12th Annual Retreat at the Gordon Resort Hotel, popularly known as McCarthy Beach, from June 27 to June 30, 2024. This year’s retreat, themed “Positive Impact,” highlighted the Club’s ongoing commitment to making a meaningful difference within the Urhobo communities.
The retreat provided an invaluable opportunity for members to strengthen their bonds, engage in team-building activities, and foster a sense of community. The relaxed setting facilitated improved communication and collaboration among members, creating lasting memories and a stronger sense of belonging. The retreat also served as a platform for strategic planning and goal setting. Members reviewed the Club’s vision and mission, set goals for the upcoming year, and brainstormed innovative solutions to challenges. These discussions ensured that the Club remains aligned with its core values and future direction.
As part of its commitment to extending a positive impact, the Club visited the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp at Ewu Community, hosting victims of the Okuama destruction. During the visit, the Club donated a live cow to support the government’s rehabilitation efforts. Speaking at the IDP camp, President Matthew OGAGAVWORIA expressed the Club’s empathy and support for the displaced individuals. “We took the decision to support the IDPs because we feel their pains and understand the hardships they are going through. We particularly thank the Delta State Governor, His Excellency, Rt Hon Sheriff Oborevwori, for moving swiftly to give succor to the victims of the Okuama destruction,” said President OGAGAVWORIA.
On Friday, June 28, 2024, the Atamu Social Club paid a courtesy call on the President General of Eku Community, Olorogun Dudu Akpotor. The delegation also included the Deputy Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Barrister Arthur Akpowowo, and other community officials who graciously hosted the Club. The President and members of the Atamu Social Club were warmly received and expressed their gratitude for the hospitality shown to them.
In addition to their visit to the IDP camp, the Club organized a Free Medical Outreach at Eku Community. This initiative aimed to increase access to healthcare for those who cannot afford medical services or have difficulty reaching clinics. The outreach program provided essential medical services directly to the community, significantly benefiting underserved and remote areas.
Key highlights of the Free Medical Outreach included early detection and intervention through free checkups and screenings, which facilitated early detection of health issues, enabling timely and cost-effective treatments, leading to better long-term health outcomes. Raising health awareness through educational components focused on health issues, disease prevention, and healthy lifestyle choices empowered individuals to take charge of their health. Additionally, interactions with community members provided valuable insights into specific health concerns, helping to tailor future outreach programs and health initiatives.
